“Springare” figurine by Stig Lindberg
Enchanting ceramic horse figurine by Stig Lindberg, called “Springare”, meaning “Steed”. This design was executed in different sizes at Gustavsbergs Studio, this size being among the larger and rarer. The stylized horse is painted with a brown and polkadot pattern over the body.
The story goes that at the first Studio exhibition of “Springare”, a cavalry officer was present. He contemplated the horse for a long time, becoming increasingly provoked. Finally, he exclaimed: “It looks nothing like a horse – yet it is the horsiest horse I have ever seen!”. This is a fine illustration of Lindberg’s great skill, through which he was able to capture the essence of a horse in this whimsical manner – perhaps another kind of essence than the archetypical one.
